Line in the grass
Luca partnered with the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians to release a short film opposing a federal proposal to designate their ancestral lands in Big Cypress National Preserve as wilderness. This designation would have stripped the tribe of their rights to live and steward the land, ignoring the critical role of Indigenous practices in preservation. Working with Tribal Elder Betty Osceola, Chief Talbert Cypress, and filmmaker Dan Lior, Luca crafted a compelling narrative to challenge the flawed idea that “untouched” nature is better. The film, shared on social media, garnered over 500,000 views and helped drive 70,000 petition signatures. This led to a temporary suspension of the designation and a co-stewardship agreement with the National Park Service, showcasing the power of storytelling and collaboration to drive real change.
Luca and Dan shot, edited, and produced this piece in 24 hours.
